Wishlist – Directory

Any University Directory has two main purposes in university life – to provide general enquiry information and staff specific information.

General Enquiries, as its name suggests, covers all the standard details, including contact numbers, contact hours, email, office locations, for a variety of services.

The Staff Directory should provide more specific information that will help students to get in contact with staff.

Standard Services which should be available on all university apps:

  • General Enquiry
  • Undergraduate and Postgraduate Coursework Students
  • High Degree Research Students
  • International Students
  • Technical Support for staff/students
  • Security

For each of  these services, the following should be included:

  • Contact Phone Number
  • Contact Email Address
  • Available Contact Hours
  • Office Location

Staff Directory

All Staff  details should include:

  • Job Title(s)
  • Office Phone Number
  • Office Location
  • Qualifications
  • Department
  • Contact Email Address
  • Available contact hours

Enhanced features

Some really useful added functionality would include:

  • Integrated Office Phone Number – When clicked, gives the user the option to use the iPhone to dial the number.
  • Integrated Office Location – Brings up the map, and marks office’s location. (create directions from user’s location to office location, when on campus).
  • Integrated Email Address – Opens up iPhone email application, creates a new email to send to the selected person.

The screenshots provided below are taken from two separate apps, that both contain handy ways of displaying the directory.

This is a good example of what students require in terms of Staff-related information.
However, it does not provide any Service-related contact details.
Though still very basic, it provides a very useful starting point where all the services’ can easily be located.
